During the 90’s, area population increased 75 percent, and the population is expected to almost double by the year 2010. Southern Madison County accounts for over 90 percent of all population growth in the Jackson metropolitan area, with the 30 to 50 year old age group exhibiting the largest increase. Housing growth in Southern Madison County accounts for 90 percent of the housing growth in the metropolitan area; and housing units are expected to exceed 100 percent growth in the next 10 years.
Southern Madison County has the state’s highest median income at $77,202, and the highest median home value. The average income for residents within a 1-mile radius of the Galleria Development is $100,000. Many residents in Southern Madison County have college degrees, and over 50 percent of the residents are in professional or managerial occupations. Given the affluence of the county, retail sales within the area are very strong, and are projected to exceed $1 Billion by 2010. The number of business locations in Southern Madison County is expected to number more than 3000 within the next 10 years, and the number of business establishments is expected to grow to 2500.
The Nissan North America Canton Plant has had a major impact on Madison County, and much of the growth in the area can be attributed to the $1 Billion plant’s presence in the community. The plant began operations in 2003, and employs approximately 5300 people. The presence of the plant has contributed to the growth of Southern Madison County, and the plant’s presence in the community has led to the development of several ancillary industries as well as retail development, restaurants and many other businesses. Galleria’s convenient location will make it easy for Nissan employees to visit, and live there. Southern Madison County is poised to continue to reap the benefits of having Nissan select Canton as the home of one of its most productive automotive plants in North America.
